The DC Extended Universe is changing. New DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have met with some of the big players in the space of late to tell them about the new direction for the franchise. They cancelled Wonder Woman 3, confirmed that Henry Cavill will not be returning as Superman, and now, as we learned from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, put the brakes on an immediate sequel to Black Adam.

After meeting with Gunn, Johnson wrote a lengthy message on Twitter updating fans about the future of Black Adam. “James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adamwill not be in their first chapter of storytelling,” he wrote. “However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.”

Black Adam was a project close to Johnson’s heart. He hoped it would change the hierarchy at DC. And while that hierarchy has undoubtedly been shaken up, it wasn’t in the way Johnson was expecting. Obviously, Black Adam won’t be fighting Henry Cavill’s Superman like Johnson wanted.

The Rock shares that there will be no Black Adam 2, at least not for a long time

With Black Adam underperforming at the box office, this news isn’t particularly surprising, at least not when put in the context of all the other changes Gunn and Safran have been making to the DCEU. It’s been a lot to process, but perhaps a floor-to-ceiling rehab is what the franchise needs. After all, Gunn has never done us wrong before! I genuinely believe we are in good hands.

And it’s clear the Rock isn’t holding onto any hard feelings. “James and I have known each other for years and have always rooted for each other to succeed,” he wrote. “It’s no different now, and I will always root for DC (and Marvel) to win and WIN BIG.” So if the Rock can be so understanding, can’t the rest of us?

As for what comes next in the DCEU, we’ll have to sit tight and let Gunn and Safran do their thing.
