The Boys spinoff Gen V is a “really cool mystery”

Amazon’s subversive superhero show The Boys is unlike anything else in the genre. It’s highly satirical, gruesome and downright absurd at times. Expect the upcoming spinoff series Gen V to be just as shocking. Look no further than the explosive, bloody trailer released at CCXP:

Gen V follows a group of young superheroes at at Godolkin University, a college for superheroes set up by Vought International. The students compete with each other to become the superhero protectors of major U.S. cities. And it’s not healthy, friendly competition. These kids will do anything to make it to the top, and as far as Vought is concerned, anything goes.

Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon, spoke about the spinoff with Collider. While Gen V will naturally have connections back to the mother show, it will remain its own entity. “I’m so excited for people to see this show. I think what we were hoping for is a show that really felt like its own thing, but also felt like it was true to the universe that Eric [Kripke] and Seth [Rogen], and Evan [Goldberg] have created. And it really delivers,” he said.

"The young ensemble [is] fantastic. We have connections to The Boys universe and cast sort of peppered carefully throughout the season. So there are lots of Easter eggs that I think fans will love. And it’s a great combination of social commentary, blood, there’s lots of blood, a really cool mystery."

The Boys spinoff Gen V will tie back into the original show

More than just tying back to the main show, it sounds like Gen V might set up some important plot points. “I think people will be surprised as they come into the show, and the show evolves, the implications that Gen V has on The Boys,” Sanders said. “The two shows have some really interesting connections. So I’m probably saying more than I should, but I’m really excited. We’re thrilled with the results.”

We already know that several stars from The Boys will make appearances in Gen V, such as Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Colby Minifie (Ashley Barrett) and P.J. Byrne (Adam Bourke). As for the new cast, it includes Patrick Schwarzenegger (son of Arnold), Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Jason Ritter, Clancy Brown and Alexander Calvert.

Gen V doesn’t have a release date yet, but we can expect to see it hit Amazon Prime sometime in 2023.
