Lately, Netflix has gained a reputation for canceling shows before their time is up. And they’re not pushing against that today, as 1899 creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Freise shared in a statement that the streamer has canceled the trippy sci-fi epic.

Before bo Odar and Freise created 1899, they worked on Dark, another mind-bending Netflix drama. That show got to go on for a while, but such isn’t the fate for 1899. As the statements says, “That’s life.”

1899 won’t be back for season 2 on Netflix

1899 starts out as a period drama about a group of mismatched passengers on a luxury liner headed to the United States, but things take a turn after they stumble on another ship that had previously disappeared. Soon, people are having visions, others start dying, and some begin to act very strangely indeed.

I enjoyed the first season of 1899, although not so much that I’m crushed over the news that it won’t be coming back. These puzzle box kinds of shows tend to favor plot over character;1899 was no exception and that’s not generally my jam. Plus, parts of it were a little obvious in an eye-rolling kind of way. To wit: you’re making a spooky drama about the mysterious depths of the human mind and your theme song is an industrial cover of “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane? C’mon, 1899 producers, I watched your show so I know you’re more creative than that.

Still, 1899 was grim and moody and ambitious and was clearly setting itself up for more story to come. I’m sorry we won’t get to see that, I’m sorry for all the fans who are disappointed, and I tip my hat to the creators.

Alright, onto the next Netflix cancelation. Any guesses?
