House of the Dragon wins surprise Golden Globe, Emma D’Arcy loses

It’s officially awards season! The 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards were held the other night, where the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hangs out little statues to movies, shows and actors they think are worthy. Normally I don’t put much stock in award shows…but when they award stuff I like, suddenly I’m more interested. Funny how that works.

That’s a long-winded way of saying that House of the Dragon won the award for Best Drama Series, which is the top TV award of the night! With stiff competition from the likes of Better Call SaulThe CrownOzark and Severance (a show so good that House of the Dragon showrunner Miguel Sapochnik even complimented it in his acceptance speech), this was a surprise. I really liked House of the Dragon but honestly didn’t think it would win awards like this so early in its life.

Sapochnik was caught unprepared in his acceptance speech, by the way, as were actors MIlly Alcock (young Rhaenyra Targaryen) and Emma D’Arcy (adult Rhaenyra Targaryen). You can tell they truly didn’t expect to win (if they did I imagine HBO would have sent more people) and it’s pretty adorable:

D’Arcy was also nominated in the category of Best Actress in a Television Series, Drama. They lost that award to Zendaya, who won her second Golden Globe for her performance in Euphoria. Oh well, at least it’s in the HBO family. And D’Arcy will have more chances as House of the Dragon continues.
