The same people behind the upcoming movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves are working on a live-action D&D TV show.

Dungeons & Dragons, the popular tabletop role-playing game where you go on fantasy adventures with your friends, has been around since the ’70s, and has only grown more popular with time. D&D gained a lot of new converts during the pandemic, when there was nothing to do but pretend you were an elven monk battling a lich king. Critical Role is a popular D&D game streamed to hordes of followers; it even has its own animated TV adaptation. The age of Dungeons & Dragons is here!

So it’s not a huge surprise to hear that eOne and Paramount Pictures are teaming up to make a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series. According to Deadline, it will be eight episodes long, with the pilot written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. Thurber’s credits include the enduring 2004 comedy Dodgeball as well as Red Notice, the most successful movie in the history of Netflix.

Paramount Pictures and eOne are also the people behind the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie, Honor Among Thieves. And yes, they are hoping this turns into some kind of shared cinematic universe, with movies, TV shows (scripted and unscripted) and games all working in tandem. It’s anyone’s guess how that’ll go.

There’s no word on when the D&D show might premiere, or what it’s about. Dungeons & Dragons has a long history, so there’s plenty of material to pick from. They could adapt the contents of dozens of D&D novels written over the years, they could make up a new story about elves and dwarves and what-have-you, they could make a sitcom about a group of D&D players living in Cincinnati; the possibilities are endless.
