AMC’s Interview With The Vampire show surprised me with its quality. I dunno, the idea of adapting a 1976 Anne Rice novel that already had a successful 1994 movie adaptation sounded like a cash grab to me. So I was delighted when the actual show turned out to be moody, dramatic, and twisted in all the right ways.

But AMC isn’t leaving it there. This past Sunday, they aired the first episode of Mayfair Witches, based on another series of novels by Anne Rice. This show is about a neurosurgeon, Dr. Rowan Mayfair, who discovers that she is the latest in a long line of witches. So far, the show hasn’t been received as warmly as Interview was, but AMC is determined to create an Anne Rice Cinematic Universe, so we can expect more of it anyway.

Speaking on the Television Critics Association press tour, Mayfair Witches showrunner Esta Spalding and Anne Rice universe executive producer Mark Johnson teased crossovers between the two shows (and maybe whatever else comes out) in the future. “There’s a character connection between both shows,” Spalding said, although she didn’t identify who.

“There are ongoing conversations. We want to tie these worlds together in a way that makes sense,” Johnson added. There’s already been some crossover in that both shows are set in New Orleans, where Anne Rice lived and set many of her stories.

Mayfair Witches season 1 will cover the entirety of the first book

The first season of Mayfair Witches will last eight episodes. “Basically, the first season is the first book,” Spalding confirmed. “We wanted to start with Rowan, and we wanted to follow her journey.”

Adapting the entire book means that they’ll have to cut out some of the middle, in particular some of the bits where we explore the history of the Mayfair Witches. Spalding hopes they can explore more of that in a second season.

This is a little different from Interview With The Vampire; the first season of that show only adapted about half of Rice’s book, with the second season set to finish it off. We don’t know exactly when Interview is coming back, but we know it’s on its way.
