Rejoice: House of the Dragon won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Television Series for its debut season! Co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik was on hand at the Golden Globes to accept the award alongside actors Emma D’Arcy and Milly Alcock (older and younger Rhaneyra respectively).

If you’ve wanted to check out Sapochnik’s somewhat funny House of the Dragon acceptance speech, look no further. You can watch it right here:

House of the Dragon acceptance speech: “As you can tell, we didn’t think we were gonna win.”

House of the Dragon’s win came as a huge shock not just to viewers, but also to everyone attached to the show; Miguel Sapochnik outright admitted in his speech that he didn’t expect to win, and George R.R. Martin said the same on his blog. Game of Thrones never won the Golden Globe for Best Drama during its run, despite being nominated five times. So it feels like a pretty big deal that Dragon took it home despite being up against heavyweights like The CrownSeverance, and the final season of Better Call Saul.

After getting over his shock and calling for a round of applause for D’Arcy, Alcock, and the rest of the cast, Sapochnik finally got his footing and share a “really important” memory from the show’s world premiere:

"I noticed, when we did the premiere in [Lost Angeles], what everyone did is they had this kind of thing of relief rather than being excited…and then they got excited. And it was really heartwarming to know that we actually tread in the [footsteps] of Game of Thrones, because that was one really good show."

You can watch the first season of the Golden Globe award-winning series House of the Dragon on HBO Max. Season 2 is due to start filming in March, and will likely premiere sometime in 2024.
