During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito revealed the one thing that he required of show creator Jon Favreau before agreeing to join the Star Wars universe.

“I said to him, ‘Jon I want to work with people I like,’ that’s the bottom line. I did not want to say, but came close to saying, ‘I would do it for free,'” Esposito joked. “I said I have one request, please I must have a cape. And he said, ‘done deal!'”

Esposito plays The Mandalorian’s main villain, Moff Gideon, and the cape definitely fits his menacing demeanor. The veteran actor also described what he likes the most about being on the hit Star Wars show.

“This show allowed me to feel like a kid again,” Esposito said. “It made me dream again, it made me be in wonder again, it made me feel like I could go any place in the universe and carry my dreams my hopes and my imagination with me.”

Giancarlo Esposito will return as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian season 3

Heading into season 3, the main storyline will likely revolve around the possession of the Darksaber, a special lightsaber that Moff Gideon stole from the people of Mandalore before the events of season 1. Din Djarin defeats and takes the Darksaber from Gideon at the end of season 2, and wields it during his appearance in The Book of Boba Fett.

The owner of the Darksaber is considered the true ruler of Mandalore, which will bring Din Djarin into conflict with Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff). Since Moff Gideon was captured and arrested by the New Republic, it is unclear how he will play a role in season 3, but Esposito has been promoting the show and is confirmed to appear.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian will premiere on Disney+ on March 1, 2023.
