HBO premiered the first episode of its new zombie series The Last of Us this past weekend, and it was a hit. Based on the video game series from Naughty Dog, the show stars Game of Thrones veterans Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as a pair of survivors making their way across a zombie-ridden United States. This could be the start of something very special…

That said, don’t look out for The Last of Us to become one of those shows that runs for a decade. The are currently two games out: The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Part II. This first season is set to cover the events of the first game, and while there’s been buzz about HBO adapting the second — the solid numbers for the premiere are surely helping — nothing has been announced yet.

But Bella Ramsey is in, telling Elle that she’s willing to play Ellie “forever.”

"There’s no limits for me. They can do as many games as they like, as many series as they like, and I’ll be here, flying back out to Canada."

HBO wants more of The Last of Us

For his part, showrunner Craig Mazin said that “everybody at HBO” would love to see more of The Last of Us, although he cautions that he doesn’t want the series to drag on just because. (*cough* The Walking Dead *cough*).

"That’s not what we are. But to get to the end of the story in the time that we need to take to get to the proper end would be awesome. If I got to work on a set with Bella Ramsey every day for the rest of my life, I’d be thrilled."

At minimum, I bet we’ll see a second season that covers the events of The Last of Us: Part II. That game is more narratively complicated than the first, so maybe they could even get two seasons out of it. Beyond that, it will depend on whether Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, who is also heavily involved in the show, makes a Part III. For now, new episodes of The Last of Us air Sundays on HBO.
