Last year, AMC’s biggest ever series, The Walking Dead, came to an end after over a decade on the air. But fear not, the franchise isn’t finishing anytime soon. We’re now entering the era of spin-offs.
First up is Dead City, which follows the unlikely duo of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they head to New York City to save Maggie’s kidnapped son, Hershel.
After that, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) will head to France in his own show. And finally, and perhaps the most exciting of all, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) will return in a new limited series in 2024!
With all of these spinoffs airing within a year of each other, fans have been wondering whether we’ll see any crossovers. The franchise has featured plenty of crossovers in the past, especially between The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.
Speaking to E! News, Jeffrey Dean Morgan revealed that crossovers between the upcoming shows are not out of the question. “I think the door is open because we are all on the same timeline,” he said. “They are existing at the same time. So I think there is the opportunity to bring a character from this show, a character from that show, and do something else that can continue.”
Lauren Cohan had similar thoughts. “There’s hope of a collision,” she said.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan thought the idea for The Walking Dead: Dead City was “crazy”
Back when Negan was first introduced to The Walking Dead by brutally murdering Maggie’s husband Glenn, the idea that they would eventually be civil with each other seemed preposterous. As time went on, the two found themselves working together to fight common enemies. By the end of season 11, Maggie allowed Negan and his wife Annie sanctuary within Alexandria, even if she hasn’t fully forgiven him.
Fast forward to today, and they’re off to New York City together. “When the idea was first pitched, I thought it was as crazy as you probably did,” Morgan said. “How do you put these two characters together? There was a lot of talk about spinoffs and how they would do it.”
That said, once the story was laid out, he was totally down. “It’s really interesting. It’s really interesting storytelling.”
The Walking Dead: Dead City premieres sometime in June. No exact release date has been announced yet. Watch this space.
