The Battle of the Bastards remains one of the high points of Game of Thrones. See how the sausage was made in these behind-the-scenes pics.
“Battle of the Bastards” was an episode of Game of Thrones that aired in 2016. It features a clash between the Boltons, led by the dastardly bastard Ramsay Bolton; and a rag tag group of Northerners and wildlings assembled by Jon Snow. In my opinion, I don’t think any other show has yet equaled this episode when it comes to dramatic battles on TV.
So the Battle of the Bastards remains a high water mark, for Game of Thrones and TV in general. Even seven years later, I love seeing new behind-the-scenes pics, which is why I was happy when HBO released a fresh cache:
Here we see a crew member saunter in front of the terrifying Bolton shield wall, makeup artists touch up an actor’s battle makeup, and my personal favorite: a pile of prop corpses stacked high.
I don’t think “Battle of the Bastards” was quite the best episode of Game of Thrones — that honor might go to the following episode, “The Winds of Winter” — but it’s awfully close, and it continues to exert influence on the industry. Can HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon top it? Stay tuned for more of that show come 2024.
