Jason Momoa says he’ll “always be Aquaman”

The DC Extended Universe is in crisis…or rather, it has been in crisis for years, ever since Justice League came out in 2017. But the recent shake-ups have been particularly seismic. Ben Affleck is out as Batman. Wonder Woman 3 was canceled. Henry Cavill left as Superman…and then he came back…and then he left again. Ezra Miller had a globe-hopping meltdown while Warner Bros. Discovery anguished over what to do with their Flash movie. And now it all falls to new DC Studios presidents James Gunn and Peter Safran to right the ship.

Those two are shuffling lots of things around, although one cast member who thinks they’ll be sticking around is Jason Momoa, who plays Aquaman. “I’m in the house of Warner Bros. and they are liking a lot of stuff I’m doing,” Momoa told a crowd at the Sundance Film Festival. “We got a lot of good things coming.”

One of those things is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is coming later this year. The first Aquaman movie was a hit and the sequel is already shot, so it’s at least coming out. “It’s really a journey with the brothers,” Momoa told TheWrap, referencing Aquaman’s brother Orm Curry. “Patrick Wilson is phenomenal and there’s just a lot of themes that are going on in it. What I wanted to do was not have some alien force that’s trying to attack us. It’s not gonna be something that’s from an outer world. It’s all about what we’re doing to our planet, and we’re expediting what’s gonna happen when you melt the caps. It’s our future. You’re seeing it happen right now.”

Jason Momoa filmed Aquaman sequel alongside “a couple different Batmans”

Momoa even mentioned that he filmed material for the new movie with a couple of different DC actors, although he was stingy with the details. “I shot with a couple different Batmans, but you just don’t know what’s going on and we’ll see what the end product is,” he said.

Like Marvel, DC is on something of a multiverse kick right now. The Flash movie in particular is supposed to be about multiple universes. Might a few Batmen show up in Aquaman 2? The return of Ben Affleck? Will Michael Keaton be a part of it?

Whatever happens, Momoa doesn’t sound like he intends to give up his role as the King of Atlantis. “I’ll always be Aquaman,” he said. “Ain’t anyone coming in there and taking s**t. There might be some other characters, too. I can play other things, too. I can be funny and savage and charming.”

"[I’m feeling] really f**king good. Aquaman’s not going anywhere so it’s alright. Everything’s gonna be good, we’re still here and then I might be dipping into some other things too."

All this talk of doing “other things” could be a reference to the persistent rumor that Momoa could play DC antihero Lobo on the big screen, a part that he would indeed be suited for. But could he play two characters in the DC universe as once?

Jason Momoa reunites with Emilia Clarke

Momoa wasn’t at Sundance to talk about DC; that just happened. He was there promoting a new environmental documentary called Deep Rising, which he narrates. Meanwhile, his former Game of Thrones costar Emilia Clarke was there promoting her new movie Pod Generation. And then this happened:
