Peacock cancels Vampire Academy, hopes no one notices
By Dan Selcke
Peacock quietly gave the axe to its YA drama Vampire Academy on Friday night, hoping everyone would forget over the weekend. NO SUCH LUCK!
We have the first TV cancelations of the year: Apple TV+ has canceled Justin Theroux’s The Mosquito Coast, about an American inventor who uproots his family to live in Latin America, after two seasons. Meanwhile, Peacock has canceled two YA dramas: One of Us Is Lying and Vampire Academy.
All of these shows were canceled late this past Friday night, by the way, no doubt in the hopes that journalists and bloggers — by then deep into their weekends — wouldn’t bother to write them up, or that the news would be overshadowed by other things that happened over the weekend. Well, we remember, Peacock and Apple TV+. Nice try. NICE TRY.
Anyway, One of Us Is Lying was about a group of young people who have to figure out which one of them is a murderer. That also ran for two seasons.
Vampire Academy, which only got one season, is probably the highest profile cancelation here, since it was the most expensive. It was based on the book series by Richelle Mead and adapted by Julie Plec, who created the very successful series The Vampire Diaries on The CW. But they can’t all be YA horror dramas that run for eight successful seasons.
