Everything Everywhere All at Once leads Oscar noms, James Cameron snubbed
By Dan Selcke
The 2023 Oscar nominations are out! Who got the nod, who got snubbed, and who will win?
The big winner today is Everything Everywhere All At Once, which led the pack with 11 nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Best Original Screenplay for the same duo, and every single acting award accept Best Actor (and there are two people from the movie up for Best Supporting Actress, so they make up for it). Everything Everywhere was a very cool sci-fi movie that found an audience despite not being part of a big franchise, so it’s nice to see it get some love.
Next up, the war epic All Quiet on the Western Front and Martin McDonagh’s excellent intimate drama The Banshees of Inisherin scored nine nominations each. Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick, the two biggest movies of 2022, scored four and six nominations respectively, including nods for Best Picture.
Avatar: The Way of Water nominated for Best Picture, but James Cameron snubbed for Best Director
Alright, let’s get to the good stuff: who got snubbed this year? A quick rundown:
- Avatar: The Way of Water netted a nomination for Best Picture, but the man behind the movie — James Cameron — didn’t get a nod for Best Director.
- The only Marvel film to get any nominations this year was Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which nabbed five nods, including for Angela Bassett for Best Supporting Actress. No Best Picture nom, though.
- A lot of people expected Paul Dano to get a Best Actor nod for his work in The Fablemans, but it was not to be.
