Emilia Clarke is having “a wicked time” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Game of Thrones veteran Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) was at the Sundance Film Festival to promote her new film The Pod Generation, a drama set in the near future where people outsource their pregnancies to pieces of technology called “pods.” It’s an interesting concept that asks questions about the intersection of morality and technology, and it’s the kind of project that Clarke hopes to make a lot more of.

“The thing that I want most for the rest of my career is to work with as many auteurs and filmmakers in the independent film space and be as creatively fulfilled as I possibly can be,” Clarke told IndieWire. “And I’ve had access to some incredible experiences and been able to work with some astonishing people. I absolutely adore high concept ideas and material. That’s the stuff I really enjoy reading as well, kind of magical realism. I think that’s where the joy and of storytelling comes into its own. When you are able to give someone a world that is not our own to explore incredibly big philosophical ideas. To do as many of those as I possibly can moving forward would be excellent.”

This comes after Clarke has participated in her fair share of big budget franchises. Besides Game of Thrones, she also played Qi’ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and still gets asked if she might return to the role. “I mean… no,” she laughed, confirming that nothing is in the works. “That would be lovely, that would be very nice.”

All that said, Clarke is still involved in the world of big budget franchises. She’ll appear alongside Samuel L. Jackson in Secret Invasion, one of the cooler-looking Marvel series coming out on Disney+ this year.

We don’t know who exactly Clarke is playing in Secret Invasion, but it sounds like it’s going well. “I’m genuinely having a wicked time on Marvel, though, they’re absolutely brilliant,” she said.

Secret Invasion comes out this year, probably in the first half. The Pod Generation doesn’t have a release date yet.
