There are at least 10 months left before we get a new episode of Doctor Who. However, there is some very exciting news regarding the beloved sci-fi show. Former and now current showrunner Russell T Davies has officially confirmed that more spinoffs are coming.

This news comes on the heels of the reveal that Disney+ will exclusively be streaming new seasons of Doctor Who from here on out. And with such a big conglomerate backing the series up, it’s no surprise that the budget has increased exponentially, paving the way for spinoffs.

But what will the spinoffs be about? Are we getting villain-centric shows? There is much yet to be revealed, but Davies is telling us all he can…for now.

Doctor Who is getting more spinoffs!

Speaking with GQ, Davies confirmed that Doctor Who is entering its “next stage.”

"So I thought – with no criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC’s measures – it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who. I thought the streaming platforms are ready, the spin-offs are ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin-off. Those spin-offs declined when I left, and I can see why. And I very much left after 2008, when the money became scarce. I think that’s fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things."

But all that is changing now! We’ve got Disney money, we’ve got interest, and the fandom is ready for the world of Doctor Who to expand and grow. In what capacity this will occur is yet to be seen, but I trust that Davies has good ideas. He’s already earned fan plaudits by bringing back David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble in a series of specials to start airing later this year. After Jodie Whittaker left the show, Tennant is technically play the Fourteenth Doctor, although his his return will be short and sweet, as Ncuti Gatwa is set to take over as the official next Doctor soon after.

I cannot wait for the 60th Anniversary special, which will air later this year. It will have so many surprises and throwbacks. Davies, Tennant and Tate will blow our minds, and it will just be the beginning.

This is a great time to be a Doctor Who fan, isn’t it?

dark. Next. House of the Dragon casting blonde-haired child twins; Blood and Cheese is coming?
