Has the time of the video game adaptation come or what? As we speak, one of the hottest new shows running is The Last of Us on HBO, an adaptation of the video game of the same name. Netflix is running shows based on Cyberpunk 2077 and League of Legends as well as preparing a new one based on Horizon: Zero Dawn (and canceled a terrible one based on Resident Evil).
And over at Amazon, Jeff Bezos is getting top talent to adapt video games to the small screen: Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of Westworld, are making a Fallout show; The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins is working on God of War. They also have the rights to Mass Effect, so expect an announcement there sooner or later. And now, The Hollywood Reporter has it that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is developing a series about Tomb Raider.
The first Tomb Raider game came out way back in 1996 for the PlayStation. It’s an action-adventure series about an Indiana Jones-like explorer named Lara Croft. In the beginning, the games got a lot of attention for Lara’s absurd proportions, but there was a sturdy series underneath which stood the test of time.
Amazon adds Tomb Raider to list of video game projects
Tomb Raider has been adapted to the screen before; Lara was played by Angelina Jolie in a pair of movies in the early 2000s and in a more recent film by Alicia Vikander. Netflix also ran an animated Tomb Raider series.
We don’t yet know who will play Lara in the new show. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who’s been in pretty steady demand since her show Fleabag aired on Amazon, will write the scripts. Waller-Bridge is also appearing alongside Harrison Ford in the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, so she has some adventure flick bona fides.
Let the video game TV show royal rumble begin.
