Stranger Things debuted in 2016, a little-known sci-fi/horror series based on an original idea with no marketing to speak of. Seven years later, it’s one of the biggest TV shows in the world, and ready for its grand finale: the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things will be its last.

Whether that scares you or thrills you, you have a while to wait yet; we don’t expect to see the final episodes until 2024. Filming will happen this year. And now, thanks to star Noah Schanpp (Will Byers), we have an idea of when it will start.

Schnapp was chatting with fans on an Instagram Live session when one asked if his schooling will interfere with shooting (Schnapp is currently going to college). As it ends up, no. “I’m done with school in May and starting to shoot in May,” the actor said.

Stranger Things season 5 starts shooting in May

A start date of May sounds about right. Every season of Stranger Things has gotten progressively more complicated, and we expect the team to be toiling away on season 5 for a while before they get into the editing room to produce the final episodes. A 2024 premiere date still seems likely.

When last we left Hawkins, IN, the wicked Vecna had managed to punch a hole through reality, allowing the nightmarish Upside Down dimension to bleed into our own. Expect the final season to wrap all that up, as well as give us endings for characters we’ve all grown attached to, including Will.
