Emilia Clarke: Working on Marvel’s Secret Invasion is “mind-boggling”
By Ashley Hurst
Between her roles as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys, and her brief spell as Qi’ra in the Star Wars universe, Emilia Clarke is very much a household name for geeks. Nowadays, an impressive genre résumé isn’t complete until you land a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is the biggest movie franchise in the history of the world.
After landing the role of S.W.O.R.D. commander Abigail Brand in Secret Invasion — a new Marvel show that will premiere on Disney+ later this year — Clarke can call check another box on her CV. Speaking to Collider at Sundance Film Festival, she compared working on Marvel to her other jobs. It turns out there’s nothing quite like it:
"It’s mind-boggling. I’ve got to tell you, the way that those shows and films are created is mind-boggling. It’s like everyone at Marvel knows how to unlock the Rubik’s cube, and you couldn’t even possibly — I can’t do a Rubik’s Cube to save my damn life. I hope a lot of people can’t also. It’s like they have some secret thing, and it just works. It just works! I’ve tried to understand it, and I’ve tried to be like, ‘Okay, logically how is this, how do you guys, what’s the…?’ They’re drinking some water over there. I don’t know what it is. It’s fabulous. […] They nail it. They just absolutely nail it."
Emilia Clarke will join Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle in Secret Invasion
Given how many movies and shows Marvel Studios turns out, you’d assume that sets would be chaotic. But according to Clarke, everyone is pretty relaxed. “I’m not the only actor to say that working with them is just kind of brilliant,” she said. “It really is. We had a lot of laughs. They’re just so chill, and I think I’m not that chill, and I think if I were them, I would be so unchill all the time.”
Clarke joins several MCU veterans in Secret Invasion, including Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Martin Freeman (Everett K. Ross) and Don Cheadle (James Rhodes).
Secret Invasion doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but it will air on Disney+ sometime this year. Its release was pushed back slightly after it had to undergo several reshoots in September 2022. We can’t wait to see Emilia Clarke take center stage again!
