House of the Dragon showrunner reveals stunning concept art by Gary Gianni

Gary Gianni has illustrated the world of Ice and Fire for years, to the point where there’s a whole book devoted entirely to his depictions of Westeros. He’s worked on a lot of Song of Ice and Fire comics, the illustrated edition of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and more.

Meanwhile, Ryan Condal is the showrunner behind House of the Dragon, HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. Condal revealed on his podcast The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of that he reached out to Gianni to work on concept art for the show, which makes perfect sense; few have more experience visualizing Martin’s work than Gianni.

Condal even showed off the art on Twitter. Take a look:

A Song of Ice and Fire illustrator Gary Gianni made concept art for Aemma Arryn’s funeral scene on House of the Dragon

This looks to be the scene from the premiere episode where the bodies of Queen Aemma Arryn and her stillborn son Baelor are burned with dragonfire. Here’s the finished version from the show:

Ryan Condal is a huge fan of Martin’s work. It’s awesome that he reached out to Gianni, someone else deeply familiar with this world, to bring House of the Dragon to life.

Hopefully the second season of House of the Dragon will be just as good as the first. Look for it to air on HBO and HBO Max in 2024.
