Vox Machina recaps and reviews, season 2: Episodes 7-9
Vox Machina Episode 9: “A Test of Pride”
Aaaaand we’re back to gore. We haven’t had a lot of gory scenes since the Chroma Conclave’s attack on Emon.
I would like to point out that when the guards are doing rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to kill the townie, they’re saying “boulder, parchment, shears.” I laughed way too hard at that and for entirely too long. I love that even that detail was adapted into the show.
Scanlan meets Kaylie, a fellow gnome who, along with other townies, has been in hiding for almost two weeks. Scanlan tried to impress her, but she’s not having it. I like that she’s able to talk Scanlan into taking the refugees with him instead of him leaving alone with promises to come back with his friends (which I am absolutely sure he would have). She’s sour towards him and we can tell that it bothers him.
We’ve seen Ripley a few times this season, but her real motivations aren’t clear to us yet. Does she want to help the Chroma Conclave? Is she just using Umbrasyl to get the vestiges for herself? Is she hoping to rule somewhere as repayment for helping Thorak and the Conclave? Is she just bored from having spent a long time imprisoned in Whitestone and wants to go out and live her best life?
We don’t know yet. But it is clear that her intentions are not very good.
Grog’s conscience gets the best of him and he ultimately decides he wants to stay and give Kevdak a piece of his mind. We saw in his flashback just how brutal and cruel Kevdak is, and how he will not hesitate to beat the everliving lights out of family, his own son included.
Vox Machina now has two vestiges and another within reach. We got a cranky gnome, a skinny Grog, a possible attraction between Percy and Vex, and lots of questions.
With three episodes left to go for season 2, viewers should prepare for anything and everything.
