When looking back on 2022, there is no denying that the year has been a major success for HBO. Across the year, viewers have been treated to new seasons of several new and returning HBO shows that have kept us glued to our TVs and ranked among some of the best the year has had to offer.

Of course, there was no bigger HBO show in 2022 than House of the Dragon. The anticipated prequel series was the first new Game of Thrones project to grace our screens since Game of Thrones signed off the airwaves in 2019, and it proved to be more than worth the wait. Fans couldn’t get enough of the new series which smashed records, becoming one of HBO’s most successful shows ever with ratings that somehow even managed to top Game of Thrones‘ massive numbers in some territories.

While House of the Dragon has been the most talked about and biggest HBO show of the year by far, 2022 also brought with it some other truly incredible series including new seasons of hits such as His Dark Materials as well as brand new shows such as The Time Traveler’s Wife.

After such a massive year for HBO, the network will have a hard time topping itself in 2023. If we’re being honest, it’s unlikely 2023 will be quite as big for the network, because of how many HBO shows aren’t expected to return for new seasons next year.

HBO shows that won’t be back in 2023

As we look ahead to 2023, there are some great shows that will be coming to HBO across the year; however, there are also a lot of beloved shows that will be sitting the year out for various reasons. While HBO can make it hard at times to predict when new shows will come due to the long breaks between seasons that often occur with HBO shows, there are a few shows we know definitely won’t be coming back in 2023.

This list includes a trio of canceled series, one of HBO’s biggest hits, a final seasoned drama as well as what was arguably the biggest show of 2022: House of the Dragon.
