Streaming Wars, February 2023: Holding steady in the new year
By Dan Selcke
The highlight of the month was probably The Last of Us on HBO Max, but most of the streaming services are holding their own in the new year.
Each month, we read over the latest dispatches from the front lines of the Streaming Wars and assess how the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and the rest are doing. Who won the day, who was defeated, and who’s biding their time? We mark it all down on this living graph, which changes every month.
So let’s recap what happened on the battlefield in January of 2023:
Paramount+
In addition to plenty of library titles, in January Paramount+ debuted Teen Wolf: The Movie, the new werewolf drama Wolf Pack, and the second season of the Jeremy Renner show Mayor of Kingstown. Not bad. Points: +2
Netflix
Netflix had its fair share of shows that just came and went in January, but also a number of hits, including the second season of Ginny & Georgia, the second season of Vikings: Valhalla, and That ‘90s Show. And getting the final season of The Walking Dead was a nice shot in the arm as well. Points: +3
Disney+
In January, Disney+ released new episodes of shows like Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Willow and National Treasure – Edge of History. None of that made a huge impact, but it’s enough for a couple of points. Points: +2
Hulu
This month, Hulu released true-crime docuseries like Death in the Dorms and How I Caught My Killer, as well as a new animated series called Koala Man. Yawn. Points: +1
HBO Max
HBO got a lot of great press for the new series The Last of Us, and a lot of bad press for new series Velma. But hey, at least people were talking. Also, it got all three John Wick movies and those are great. Points: +2
Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video was kept afloat at the start of the year by originals like The Rig and Shotgun Wedding, as well as new seasons of Hunters and Vox Machina. Points: + 2
Apple TV+
With new episodes of Mythic Quest, Servant and The Mosquito Coast all airing in January, Apple TV+ had more going on than usual this month. Points: + 2
Peacock
Easily the biggest release on Peacock in January was Poker Face, a new series from Knives Out director Rian Johnson. After that, it’s mostly library titles and reality stuff. Points: + 2
