Syrax. Caraxes. Vhagar. Seasmoke. Meraxes. Vermithor. And so on. There are a lot of dragons in HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon. Many of them have complicated names, most can tear you limb from limb as easily as blinking, and all are very, very cool. That makes them prime inspiration for tattoos, as tattoo artist Sung-Jin Yin told Forbes.
“I’ve tattooed so many dragons since the hype hit when House of the Dragon’s trailer went live on YouTube,” Yin said last year, in the middle of the run of House of the Dragon’s first season. “The dragon figures and designs in the series are incredible, so inspiring, as well as the dragons from Game of Thrones. Hands down, it’s one of my favorite dramas and one of the coolest ways we see dragons in pop culture today—it’s definitely something people want inked, too.”
Yin is something of a specialist in dragon tattoos, with one of his designs going viral a while back and drawing the interest of clients from around the world. “It’s a tattoo with a mysterious air to it,”
The Girl with the (House of the Dragon) Tattoo
Mind you, when I saw that House of the Dragon has inspired a surge in interest in dragon tattoos, that doesn’t necessarily mean tattoos of the specific dragons from the show, although there’s surely some of that. It’s more about dragons in general, which can be traced back to both House of the Dragon and its predecessor Game of Thrones. “It’s a type of fan tattoo, and both of the series keep fans on the edges of their seats,” said Yin. “Fans who are interested in dragons in the series are naturally fascinated by the symbolism, which leads them to learning about the history of dragons in culture and art, and learn about the grandeur of the dragon itself.”
Plenty of people have gotten tattoos of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons over the years, and I expect that tattoos based on the dragons from House of the Dragon will only grow more popular as the series goes on. In fact, everything from this universe is pretty tattoo-worthy. “I love inking the coldness and grandeur of the Iron Throne,” said Yin. “It’s chilling.”
We’ll see what new designs House of the Dragon inspires when the show returns with new episodes in 2024.
