Dexter, about a serial killer who only kills other serial killers, ran for nine seasons on Showtime before ending with what is widely considered one of the worst series finale of all time. But Showtime helped rehabilitate that image with a sequel series called Dexter: New Blood, which ended up being the most-watched series in the history of Showtime. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Showtime is making a full-on franchise out of Dexter.

That said, it doesn’t sound like original series star Michael C. Hall will be involved. First up, Showtime is working on another season of Dexter: New Blood. It will follow Dexter Morgan’s son Harrison as he heads to New York City after the events of the first season and wrestles with his own violent nature. Is he, like his father, compelled to kill? All signs point to probably. Expect this series to resemble the original, but with a new cast.

Then there’s Dexter: Origins, which would take things back to the beginning and explore how a young Dexter Morgan set out on his path of friendly serial murder. This show would pick up with Dexter graduating college and joining Miami Metro, where he’d meet younger versions of the characters we know from the original show. His father Harry and sister Deb, then a teenager, will both be alive.

And on top of that, Showtime is interested in exploring the backstories of some of the other serial killers that Dexter met during the original show, including John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer from season 4. That’s a lotta murder.

Showtime is making at least three new Dexter spinoff series

This is all being jumpstarted by Chris McCarthy, a Paramount Global exec now in charge of Showtime. Paramount recently merged with Showtime, and Showtime series will help support the Paramount+ streaming service. So they want a lot of content. McCarthy is also spearheading four spinoffs of the Showtime series Billions, so he is not afraid of franchises.

McCarthy is also the guy behind the growing and hugely successful Yellowstone franchise, so he might know what he’s talking about. Stand by for more information on these new series.
