Since the success of Game of Thrones, expensive fantasy/sci-fi TV has exploded. But is the bubble about to burst? Welcome to the apocalypse.
Welcome to another episode of Take the Black, prerecorded edition! Yes, this week our beloved producer Richard Durante is away covering the Super Bowl, but we didn’t want to take the week off, so instead we filmed an episode ahead of time. That means we didn’t get to interact with our beautiful commenters this week, but at least we still got to jaw about fantasy, sci-fi, movies and TV!
Specifically, we talk about something that’s been on our minds lately: the possible bursting of the fantasy and sci-fi TV bubble. Ever since Game of Thrones became a monster hit for HBO, lots of networks and streaming services have been pouring resources into getting their own genre hits. At this point we’ve seen the results of a lot of those efforts — The Witcher, The Wheel of Time, The Rings of Power, etc. — and while some have been hits, others have come up short.
Is the industry getting ready to move on to something else? We get into it below:
Since we filmed this episode a week back, we forego the WiC News Lightning Round, but it’ll be back next week when we return live!
