According to Midgard Times, HBO will start filming the second season of its Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon on April 17 in Cáceres, Spain, and then move to the Warner Bros. studios in England. Principal photography is set to run for nine months and wrap in December of 2023.

Because the first season of House of the Dragon called for the construction of brand new sets, filming took 10 months to complete. Since the sets are already built and probably only need slight modifications, season 2 will take slightly less time, at least on paper. This doesn’t mean we get to watch any earlier, though. Given all the post-production work that needs to happen on a show like this, House of the Dragon season 2 probably won’t be on our screens until well into 2024.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the season 2 premiere gets pushed into 2025, although they’re surely aiming for 2024. If the show stays on its current path, there will be a lot more special effects-driven battle scenes in season 2, which calls for a lot of post-production and CGI work, especially with all the dragons involved.

House of the Dragon season 2 is not coming out in 2023

Season 1 concluded with the death of Rhaenrya Targaryen’s son Lucerys Veleryon, who was killed mid-flight by the humongous dragon Vhagar and her rider Aemond. The final shot featured Daemon Targaryen informing his wife Rhaenyra of her son’s demise, which prompted a look of despair and rage on her face. With her war effort already mobilized, Rhaenyra will be looking to get revenge early in season 2.

Ryan Condal will be the lone showrunner of season 2, as co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik stepped away shortly after the season 1 finale. Clare Kilner is the only director confirmed to be returning from season 1 as of this writing. She’ll be joined by veteran Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor, who will be involved in season 2 and is expected to take a large role in the production with Sapochnik gone.
