14. Margaery Tyrell and Tommen Baratheon
Look, was Tommen Baratheon too young for Margaery Tyrell? Yes. Was their marriage less a love connection and more of a strategic union designed to reward the Tyrells for their help in the war effort? Yes. Did Margaery knowingly manipulate the young, impressionable Tommen in order the further her family’s interests? Yes, but…
Well, actually all of that sounds pretty bad, but at least they weren’t related, they didn’t loathe each other, and they didn’t enjoy hunting people for sport. That’s how low the bar for romance is on this show.
And however icky parts of their relationship are, Tommen and Margaery are, at bottom, two decent human beings. Yes, Margaery is a savvy political operator, but she seems to have a basic grasp on the notions of right and wrong, and she at least appreciates the PR value of doing good for the people of Westeros. And Tommen’s just a nice boy who likes to play with his cat. It’s hard to picture either of them warmongering, or trying to have each other assassinated, or even cheating on one another. Had their marriage continued, Margaery probably would have borne Tommen children, raised them to be competent people, and made smart decisions her husband the king would happily parrot from the Iron Throne. Westeros could do a lot worse for rulers.
And if Tommen got older, parts of their relationship would no longer be as uncomfortable. But his mother made sure that didn’t happen…
