The Last Kingdom exhibit opening in real-life Bebbanburg
By Dan Selcke
For the first five seasons of Netflix’s The Last Kingdom, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) spends a lot of time trying to reclaim Bebbanburg, his ancestral castle of which he was dispossessed in the series premiere. He finally gets it back in the season 5 finale, and now, you can follow in his footsteps.
Uhtred wasn’t a real person (well, mostly not), but Bebbanburg is a real place, although these days it’s known as Bamburgh Castle. It’s on the Northumberland coast in England, and starting this weekend it will host an exhibit dedicated to The Last Kingdom.
According to Chronicle Live, the exhibition will feature props and costumes worn by Dreymon, Thea Sofie Loch Næss (Skade), Ola Rapace (Bloodhair) and Cavan Clerkin (Father Pyrlig). “Fans of The Last Kingdom will be able to see for themselves that Uhtred’s sword has returned to Bebbanburg as he said it would!” said Karen Larkin, the visitor services manager at Bamburgh Castle. “The exhibition includes a bespoke selection of key props and costumes from the series. It’s located in the Castle’s King’s Hall on the very footprint of Bebbanburg’s medieval banqueting hall – our Valhalla – where the real Uhtred could have feasted. It gives me goose bumps just thinking about it!”
"Even if you haven’t watched the series, the exhibition will bring to life characters based on Bamburgh’s epic past as capital of the Kingdom of Northumbria and the kings and queens of its Golden Age."
Carnival Films films producer Nigel Marchant, who helps make The Last Kingdom, also weighed in. “It’s truly wonderful that Bamburgh Castle are putting on this exhibition and giving the show’s loyal fans and members of the public the chance to step into the real Last Kingdom,” he said. “The props and costumes are such an integral part of the series, it seems only right they get to stand proudly on display at Uhtred’s ancestral home of Bebbanburg.”
Of course, all of this is timed to go along with the announcement that there’s a new Last Kingdom movie coming to Netflix: Seven Kings Must Die. The exhibition opens this Saturday. In addition, Follow in the Footsteps of Uhtred tours will run every Saturday through March and are free with general admission. Visitors also have a chance to become Queen or King of the North and be photographed sitting on the Wessex Throne. What King Alfred would think of his battle companion Uhtred taking his (prop) throne up to Bebbanburg, we can only speculate.
Game of Thrones extras get married in Game of Thrones costumes on Game of Thrones set
Speaking of the king and queen of the north, something very sweet happened over at a permanent exhibition dedicated to a different medieval drama. Miguel Cabrerizo and Marzenka Kochanowska were both extras on Game of Thrones. They got engaged while filming the final season in 2018. Today, Valentine’s Day, they were married on the King’s Landing set at the Game of Thrones Studio Tour at Linen Mill Studios in Banbridge, Northern Ireland, where they both work as tour guides.
They also wore costumes from the show for the occasion. This is as authentic a Game of Thrones wedding as you can have without several guests dying.
“We are huge Game of Thrones fans, so it was special to have our engagement on the set of the show, and then to be married in the world’s only official Game of Thrones Studio Tour,” said Marzenka. “To have the first wedding at the visitor attraction is very special too. We love our jobs as Studio Tour Guides. We get to share our knowledge and passion for Game of Thrones with visitors, so every day for us is fantastic.”
