Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage contemplates retiring from acting
While promoting his upcoming film She Came to Me, Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage opened up to Variety about his life decisions, his career and aging as an actor.
“I’m 53. I wonder if I want to be an actor for the next 30 years,” Dinklage said candidly. “It’s a fork in the road. It’s a common story when you hit 50. There’s a fork in the road and you either wait for inspiration or you seek it out, and I intend to keep seeking it out.”
Dinklage also pointed out the limitations actors have to deal with compared to other artists, and how he overcomes them:
"Actors sit around waiting for the jobs to come. Painters can paint, writers can write, musicians can play… actors don’t have that ability. So, we have to wait around or create and collaborate on our own things. The question is, what inspires you? What inspires me is the written word at that point in my life. I couldn’t have played this [role] 20 years ago or 20 years from now."
Peter Dinklage contemplates his future as an actor
If Peter Dinklage were to retire from acting tomorrow, to say he has a respectable resume would be an understatement. His most prominent role was as the wily Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones. Dinklage appeared in 67 episodes of the landmark drama, more than any other cast member. This impressive run was heralded by fans and critics, resulting in eight consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama. He took home four of them.
In addition to Game of Thrones and She Came to Me, Dinklage recently starred in the titular role in Cyrano, as well as Dwarf blacksmith Eitri in Avengers: Infinity War. He is also set to voice Scourge in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and appear as Casca Highbottom in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
