The first season of House of the Dragon wrapped up last year, and HBO is currently busy with the second. Like its predecessor Game of Thrones, this show has a lot of characters. It may be hard to keep track of all of them, especially with so many vowels running amock: Laenor, Laena, Rhaenys, Rhaenrya, Rhaena…yeesh, buy a consonant.

One of those many characters was Qarl Correy, played by actor Arty Froushan. Qarl was the lover of Laenor Velaryon, Rhaenrya Targaryen’s first husband. If you remember, Qarl and Laenor conspired with Daemon Targaryen and (probably) Rhaenrya to fake Laenor’s death and then to abscond together to parts unknown. That means that Laenor and Qarl could potentially return in season 2.

Froushan talked about the possibility with Express. “He’s alive!” he said. “As far as I know, and this is not a spoiler. He and Laenor escape across the high seas. So, it’s possible that he’ll return, it’s possible he won’t. I don’t know, but I’m excited to find out at some point.”

Will Laenor Velaryon take over the role of Addam of Hull in House of the Dragon season 2?

House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. There, Laenor and Qarl don’t get as happy an ending. Qarl kills Laenor during a fair for reasons unknown — it could be a lover’s quarrel, it could be because Daemon paid him off — and then vanished, never to be seen again (again, the author speculates that Daemon may have killed him).

But on the show, both characters get away. Some fans have speculated that Laenor could return in season 2 and fill the role of a different character from the book named Addam of Hull. In that scenario, Qarl could return with him, perhaps filling the role of Addam’s brother Alyn. Personally I hope that doesn’t happen, because I really like Addam and Alyn’s journies from the book and don’t want to see them changed that drastically.

As for Arty Froushan, whether or not he returns to Westeros, he does have some other kind of fantasy project lined up. “I can’t shake fantasy, I don’t know why,” he said. “I really enjoyed playing a character on House of the Dragon just over a year ago. I’m moving over to something I can’t really talk about but is sort of in a similar vein, I guess. The child inside of me loves that.”

There’s a lot of fantasy on TV right now, so he could be teasing just about anything. The WitcherThe Wheel of TimeThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? Lots of choices.

Expect House of the Dragon season 2 to premiere on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2024.
