There have been some exciting updates on the Doctor Who front as two new directors are added to the lineup for the upcoming 14th season: Julie Anne Robinson and Ben Chessell.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies broke the news while talking to Doctor Who Magazine. “Julie Anne is a dream piece of crewing for me, because I’ve wanted to work with her ever since sitting in awe of the BBC’s Blackpool. Julie Anne comes with the best reference ever – an actor called David Tennant, who starred in Blackpool and loves her!”

"After the success of Bridgerton, working with Julie Anne became an even more impossible hope. So to realise the dream and get Julie Anne to Cardiff – on two wildly different episodes, by wildly different writers! – is an absolute joy."

It is a fascinating time, especially when you’re pulling people from the likes of Bridgerton. If you’ve worked on that series, you’ve worked on one of Netflix’s most popular shows. And now you’re doing Doctor Who? It’s a great time to transition over to the time-traveling series!

Speaking of which, the upcoming season is gearing up to be a wild ride, or as Davies put it, heading into “genuinely new territory.”

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies will take Doctor Who into “genuinely new territory”

While on the Table Manners podcast, Davies revealed that he intends to stick around the show. He said he feels he will have to “spend years” as showrunner and won’t be working on anything else for “a while.”

Davies’ first batch of episodes is set to air later this year, starting with the Doctor Who 60th-anniversary special, which boasts the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble.

Fans can expect the series to enter “genuinely new territory” thanks to the hiring of director Ben Chessell. Executive producer Phil Collinson said they went to Australia to find Ben to ensure the series would get the wild, chaotic touch it needed.

With Davies planning to stick around and the addition of new directors, I feel this series will be better than ever. I cannot wait to see what is in store!
