It’s always nice to hear about Game of Thrones alumni going on to exciting new projects, both behind and in front of the camera. The latest news is that Bryan Cogman, a longtime writer on Thrones, will executive produce and serve as showrunner on a new Zorro series for Disney+. Deadline reports that Cogman will be creating Zorro (working title) with That ’70s Show veteran Wilmer Valderrama, who is also slated to serve as an executive producer as well as star.
According to Deadline, this new Zorro show is a reimagining of the classic series for a more modern audience, but will still have all the romance, swashbuckling, and adventure that made the original Zorro such a landmark show. It follows “privileged caballero Diego De La Vega who returns to his hometown of El Pueblo de Los Angeles following a family tragedy. There, he discovers a culture of corruption and injustice that will lead him to take on the mantle of the masked vigilante Zorro — America’s first true superhero.”

Cogman took to Twitter to share the news, hyping up the new series while stressing that it is still in the “early days” of development. “My friend [Wilmer Valderrama] has a deeply personal vision for this show/character and I’m honored to help him realize it,” Cogman wrote, adding that the project is “a dream come true.”
Cogman was the de facto lore master on Thrones, and penned notable episodes like “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and “The Broken Man.” The former in particular is often regarded as one of, if not the best episode of season 8. He also served as a consulting producer on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 for Amazon.
Zorro marks another big step in Cogman’s relationship with Disney; he also wrote the script for the studio’s upcoming remake of The Sword in the Stone, which is Disney’s take on the legend of King Arthur. Considering how well-regarded Cogman’s work on Thrones was, it’s a great win for Disney to have him as a resource.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for more updates on Valderrama and Cogman’s Zorro series as the story develops.
