A Game of Thrones fan rewrote season 8 as a 10-episode podcast drama

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a lot of Game of Thrones fans weren’t happy with the eighth and final season of the show. The reasons are many: they thought it was rushed, they thought some characters behaved in strange ways, they wanted more episodes, etc. That’s not the say all fans had problems, but the backlash online was fierce. I was there. I remember. I can never forget…

…ANYWAY, one fan — who identifies themselves only as “Call” — took it upon themselves to put together an alternate version of season 8. Rewriting season 8 is common enough among Game of Thrones fans — I have my own little fan-fiction version — but Call went above and beyond; they hired a cast of dozens of actors to voice the characters and produced 10 new episodes of the show, released in podcast form!

You can listen to the entirety of Game of Thrones: Season 8 Redux right here. Whether you loved season 8 or hated it, this is a really impressive project. Some of the episodes are well over an hour long!

It also doesn’t feel like Call and their collaborators are coming from a place of bitterness about the final season, which is a feeling that ran rampant in the immediate aftermath of the series finale. “I chose to write an alternate Season 8 not from a place of negativity or an attitude of ‘I can do better than that,’ but rather as a way of crafting my own sense of closure on a series I love, in a way that more closely aligned with my own understanding of the characters and their story arcs,” they write.

The aftermath of the Game of Thrones series finale remains…uh…a uniquely turbulent time within the fandom. Too often lost in the vitriol was the fact that so many Game of Thrones fans are passionate and creative people who loved the show. Projects like this are a great reminder.
