The Mandalorian: Katee Sackhoff explains why Bo-Katan doesn’t fight Din Djarin
By Dan Selcke
The third season of The Mandalorian is up and running. The first episode got us caught up not only with Din Djarin and the adorable Grogu, but also with Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), a member of the Mandalorian royal family who would be leading the whole of the Mandalorian people right now if only she’d won the Darksaber from Moff Gideon in combat. But alas, our own Din Djarin accomplished that, leaving Bo-Katan to hang out in her drafty palace alone, having been abandoned by her followers.
“I think these are people who thought Bo would do anything to lead, that Bo would fight anyone to lead, and that’s what she wanted and that’s why they were following her,” Sackhoff told Deadline. “And when they saw something in her that they didn’t respect, they left. She lost her people, her home, she lost her family, she lost everything.”
So Bo-Katan is in a dark place, to put it lightly. “Every single possibility, every place that she’s at right now, every direction she’s done before didn’t work before. That’s what she’s trying to figure out,” Sackhoff said. “This is a person who has fought, fought against her own people. She’s fought forever and she realises that doesn’t work.”
Why Bo-Katan didn’t take the Darksaber from Din Djarin when she had the chance
Is there any coming out of this funk? Well, in the most recent episode, Bo-Katan helped Din Djarin out of a jam on their home planet of Mandalore. Maybe getting out there and doing some good will revive her spirits?
She also got a chance to fight with the Darksaber and proved that she knows how to use it way better than Din can. She actually had an opportunity to take it for herself, thus gaining an important symbol of legitimacy in her quest to rule Mandalore…but she didn’t.
“It’s easier to fight an enemy for something than it is to fight somebody you actually have respect for or has done nothing to upset you,” Sackhoff explained. “If [Djin] didn’t have the darksaber, he’s done nothing that would make him her enemy… She’s not going to fight someone who she doesn’t have a reason to fight.”
Of course, Bo-Katan could have just held on the Darksaber, killed Din and Grogu to eliminate any witnesses, and then told everyone she won it in combat. But this is Star Wars, not Game of Thrones, so the characters probably aren’t going to act quite that dastardly.
The Mandalorian season 3 continues with new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+.
