Everything Everywhere All at Once wins Best Picture, lots of other awards
By Dan Selcke
If you weren’t watching The Last of Us finale last night, you may have been watching the 95th Academy Awards, which were longer and less heartbreaking but still pretty entertaining. That was in large part because of the underdog story of Everything Everywhere All at Once, a sci-fi indie film that captured the hearts of both audiences and critics. And now it’s beat out the likes of Avatar: The Way of Water to win Best Picture, as well as a slew of other awards.
In addition to its Best Picture win, Everything Everywhere picked up awards for Best Director (for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheiner), Best Original Screenplay (ditto), Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh, edging out Cate Blanchett in Tár), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan, a million miles from playing Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Best Film Editing (Paul Rogers).
It was a great showing for one of the most inventive films of 2023, a joyous romp that took the idea of the multiverse in directions Marvel hasn’t even begun to consider yet. Other notable winners included Brendan Fraser getting Best Actor for The Whale; Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon and Daniel Barrett getting Best Visual Effects for Avatar: The Way of Water; and Ruth E. Carter getting Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
