5 book series you should read if you enjoyed Shadow and Bone
The Gilded Wolves trilogy by Roshani Chokshi
If you’re looking for a book series with criminals and heists
Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows series explores the criminal underworld of Ketterdam, sending the titular Crows on exciting heists. If that’s something you particularly enjoyed, then The Gilded Wolves trilogy may be for you.
In book one, The Gilded Wolves, we meet treasure hunter Séverin Montagnet-Alarie, who is coerced by the powerful Order of Babel to assist them with a heist. In order to complete this task and receive his inheritance, he must hire a ragtag team to aid him.
Taking place in Paris in 1889, this is a story of magic, loyalty, and how decisions made can change the future forever, but you need to find a way to stay alive first.
These Violent Delights duology by Chloe Gong
If you’re looking for a book series with gangs and mystery
Set in glittering Shanghai in the 1920s, this duology will once again appeal to readers who particularly enjoyed the criminal elements of Bardugo’s novels. These Violent Delights also has plenty of mystery and magic as well.
A retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, These Violent Delights tells the story of two warring gangs: the Scarlet Gang, led by Juliette Cai; and the White Flowers, led by Roma Montagova. Loyalties are pushed and pulled as these gangs are forced to put their rivalry aside to face a greater threat: an epidemic spreading across the city with a seemingly supernatural start to it. Something magical and monstrous beats in the heart of Shanghai, and it is down to these characters and their allies to work out what.
The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir
If you’re looking for a book series that’s epic but also endlessly funny
Personally, one of my favorite things about Bardugo’s books is how funny they are despite the serious topics they cover. If this is something that appeals to you, you may want to check out The Locked Tomb.
This series defies being boxed neatly into one genre. It’s both fantasy and sci-fi; it has elements of gothic horror but is also jam-packed with contemporary humor.
The Locked Tomb takes place in the far-away future in the Empire of the Nine Houses, an empire which spans galaxies and specializes in necromancy. As Gideon Nav and her friends delve more into the hidden history of their ancestors, the more they discover about the limits to their necromantic powers, and the more secrets they uncover. And again, they do it all while being laugh-out-loud funny.
