Last year, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was a hit on Netflix. Following on from that success, del Toro will bring another iconic story to the screen: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

At this point, Frankenstein is pretty over-exposed. From James Whale’s iconic 1931 movie, to Kenneth Branagh’s cult 1994 films, there have been a lot of adaptations over the years. Then there are spinoffs like Bride of Frankenstein, parodies like Young Frankenstein, and more. Do we really need another version?

If anyone can breathe new life into Frankenstein, it’s Guillermo del Toro. Between Hellboy and Pinocchio, his track record on adaptations speaks for itself. Per Deadline, it is unclear how faithful the movie will be to Shelley’s original work. It could be a period piece, a modern adaptation, or something else.

One thing we do know is that it has a stacked cast! Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man), Mia Goth (X, Pearl), and Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight) are all on board to star.

It is understood that Goth will be playing Victor Frankenstein’s love interest, although that hasn’t been confirmed. Guillermo del Toro is still working on the script. If we had to guess, we’d say that Garfield would play Dr. Frankenstein himself and Isaac the monster.

Guillermo del Toro has wanted to adapt Frankenstein for a long time

Frankenstein does not have a release date yet, so watch this space. Del Toro has had an adaptation of the novel in mind for over a decade at this point. Back in 2008, he told MTV of his desire to direct a “definitive take” on the story. This suggests that the upcoming movie will indeed be a period piece, set during the time of the 1818 novel.

Originally, a miniseries was his preferred way of telling the story. “The only way to do the Shelley novel is to actually do a four-hour miniseries, but I think there are permutations in which you can tell the myth in a different way,” he said.

Between Pinocchio, Cabinet of Curiosities, and Frankenstein, del Toro is building a monster roster of projects at Netflix. Long may it continue!
