8. Widow’s Wail

Widow’s Wail is one of two Valyrian steel swords forged from the melted-down Stark greatsword Ice. Tywin Lannister commissioned a master armorer from King’s Landing named Tobho Mott to complete the task. Since Ice was a two-handed greatsword, there was enough Valyrian steel to create two new swords, with Widow’s Wail being one of them. The sword has red and black ripples along the blade and its scabbard is decorated with gold, cherrywood and red leather with gold lion heads.

Tywin gifts the blade to his grandson King Joffrey Baratheon prior to his wedding to Margaery Tyrell. A guest shouts the name Widow’s Wail, which Joffrey accepts before using the blade to destroy a book that his uncle Tyrion gave him. After Joffrey’s death, his brother Tommen inherits the sword along with the the Iron Throne.

7. Lady Forlorn

Lady Forlorn was the Valyrian steel sword of House Corbray of the Vale. The sword is described as smoke-grey with a heart-shaped ruby pommel. It was wielded by many Corbrays in several prominent battles in Westeros. During the battle beneath the God’s Eye, where Maegor Targaryen killed his nephew Aegon the uncrowned, Qarl Corbray used Lady Forlorn to slay Davos Darklyn of the Kingsguard. Later, during the Dance of the Dragons, Ser Corwyn Corbray was one of Aegon III’s regents and wielded the sword when he was killed at Runestone. That means we could see the sword show up on House of the Dragon, although we haven’t yet.

Most notably, Lady Forlorn was used during the First Blackfyre Rebellion by Ser Gwayne Corbray of the Kingsguard. In the Battle of the Redgrass Field, Gwayne dueled Daemon Blackfyre I, who was using the Valyrian steel greatsword Blackfyre. After an hour of fighting, Daemon eventually defeated Corbray, but went on to lose the battle and die at the hands of his half-brother Brynden “Bloodraven’ Rivers.

Lady Forlorn was also used in the Battle of the Trident during Robert’s Rebellion. The Vale supported Robert Baratheon and fought alongside him at the Trident. When Lord Corbray fell, his son Lyn took Lady Forlorn and led a charge against the Dornish line, killing Prince Lewyn Martell of the Kingsguard with the sword. Even though Lyn had an older brother Lyonel, he was allowed to keep Lady Forlorn after avenging their father and helping secure Robert’s ascension to the Iron Throne.
