4. Dark Sister

One of the two prominent Targaryen family swords, Dark Sister was in possession of the dragon lords for an unknown amount of time before they conquered Westeros. At the time of Aegon’s Conquest, Visenya Targaryen wielded Dark Sister and used it to vanquish many adversaries. During one encounter with Dornish assassins, Visenya used the sword to kill two of Aegon’s would-be killers. When Aegon contended that his guards would probably be sufficient enough protection, Visenya quickly drew Dark Sister and cut her brother’s cheek before any of his guards could react. Aegon subsequently charged Visenya with establishing the Kingsguard.

Visenya passed the legendary sword to her son Maegor the Cruel, who opted to use Blackfyre once he became king and hang Dark Sister in his chambers. When Alyssa Velaryon fled King’s Landing with her children Jaehaerys and Alysanne, she stole Dark Sister. When Jaehaerys I proclaimed himself king at Storm’s End, he had Dark Sister hanging from his hip. He eventually became the longest serving king in Westeros.

Jaehaerys’ son Baelon the Brave was the next to wield Dark Sister. He used it to avenge his older brother Aemon after he was killed by Myrish exiles on Tarth. Baelon died young of a burst belly and the sword went to his youngest son, the Rogue Prince Daemon, who we all know from House of the Dragon.

As we saw on the show, Daemon used the sword to kill Craghas Crabfeeder during the War for the Stepstones. Without giving too much away, he’ll get plenty more use out of it before the story is over.

After Daemon, the next Targaryen to possess Dark Sister was Aemon the Dragonknight. He used it to defend his cruel brother Aegon IV as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Eventually the sword made its way to Bloodraven, one of Aegon IV’s legitimized bastard children. Bloodraven was known for his ruthless tactics as Hand of the King, as well as his vast network of spies. Bloodraven’s questionable actions finally caught up to him and King Aegon V banished him to the Wall. The disgraced Targaryen loyalist apparently took Dark Sister to the Wall with him, but the sword disappeared with him north of the Wall. Although Bloodraven is found by Bran Stark decades later, it is unknown if he still has Dark Sister.
