To say that Marvel Studios is in trouble would be an exaggeration. Spider-Man: No Way Home made over a billion dollars in 2021. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever did very respectably. They’re fine.

…and yet, cracks are starting to show. Recent movies like EternalsThor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, and the most recent big Marvel blockbuster — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — is the worst-performing movie in the Ant-Man trilogy, despite it introducing a major new villain and Marvel pushing it as a big event.

Then there’s the glut of Marvel TV shows on Disney+, which have been hit and miss. You get the idea that Marvel executives are doing some course correcting; for instance, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said he intends to put out fewer shows a year. And then there’s this news…

Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso leaves company

Victoria Alonso joined Marvel Studios as chief of visual effects and postproduction back in 2006, when the studio was just starting out. She worked on 2008’s Iron Man, was there when the company was acquired by Disney, produced films like Thor and executive produced monster hits like The Avengers. During her time at the company, the MCU became the most successful franchise in the history of the movies.

And now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, she’s leaving. We don’t know why, and to be fair, there’s no reason to jump straight to panic. After all, she’s been with the company for 17 years and that’s a long time; maybe she just wanted a change.

…but given all the bumps in the road Marvel has encountered recently, it’s easy to think there’s something more to it. For instance, Alonso is in charge of special effects and we note that there’s been increased criticism of Marvel’s effects lately.

Will the MCU come out of this transitionary period stronger than ever or will it diminish? Time will tell but things are moving.
