Rumor has it that an extended cut of the forthcoming third Avatar movie could be broken up into a mini-series. That sounds crazy…until you hear the details.
During the latest episode of The Hot Mic Podcast, hosts Jeff Sneider and John Rocha talked about a report that the third Avatar movie could be nine hours long. Obviously there will be a much shorter version released in theaters, but Disney is considering finishing the visual effects on the rest and releasing it on the Disney+ streaming platform as a miniseries.
We should underline at this point that this is just a rumor, but if it’s true, I’m not mad at it.
We’ll meet new tribes of Na’vi in Avatar 3
The third movie is reportedly subtitled The Seed Bearer. We know that it will introduce to yet another new tribe of Na’vi, the antagonistic Ash People. During a special event, producer Jon Landau gave us more hints.
“I’m not going to tell you where we’re going to see different physical [features but], there will be different physical realizations of cultures on Pandora as we go through the series,” Landau said, per Inverse. In the films to follow, “there [are] also going to be, as we did with the Metkayina and the Omatikaya, different skin colors, because that’s part of our world, [and] we look at what we’re doing as a metaphor for our world.”
One of my favorite parts of Avatar: The Way of Water was seeing a completely new Na’vi tribe. It opened up the world of Pandora in a way I didn’t anticipate. I cannot wait to see what director James Cameron has in store when Avatar 3 comes out on December 20, 2024.
