In the season 1 finale of HBO’s The Last of Us, Joel (Pedro Pascal) must make a terrible decision: Does he allow Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to die so that a vaccine can be developed and the zombie plague ended, or should he save her? Of course, he makes the impulsive decision to save her, killing many Fireflies before getting her out of surgery.

After saving Ellie, the duo return to the peaceful community of Jackson. Joel lies to Ellie and assures her that she was not needed at the hospital, saying that there are other people out there who are also immune. She makes him swear that his story is true, and he does. However, while Ellie seems to accept his lie, star Bella Ramsey thinks Ellie sees through it.

“I think Ellie knows,” Ramsey told Empire Magazine. “There’s a part of her that knows or fears he’s not telling the truth. But she has to believe it. Because she can’t think about what it would mean if he isn’t telling the truth. She has to believe, because otherwise it would break her heart.”

As for Pedro Pascal, he thinks Joel has dug a hole too deep to get out of; despite knowing that Ellie is onto him, he must keep up appearances. “Ellie can smell the sense of what’s in his unconscious, and something’s off,” he explained. “It isn’t until he’s under her lens of truth that it all comes tumbling down. And he has to lie to keep it going.”

Will Ellie ever learn about Joel’s lie? Well, if you’ve played the second The Last of Us video game, you know the answer. Season 2 will jump straight into the events of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part II.

Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal dance on The Last of Us set

To conclude on a light note, here’s a video shared on Reddit of stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey sharing a little dance after what was sure to be a long and grueling day on set. I don’t think their dancing skills are quite as good as their acting, but hey, it’s a bit of fun and we’re here for it! Watch it below:
