Strap in fellow Westeros fans, because we have some huge news to share. Variety reports that a brand new Game of Thrones prequel spinoff centered around Aegon the Conqueror is being “actively discussed” at HBO. This is not a drill!
According to Variety’s sources, this new prequel is the very early stages of development. No writers are currently attached to the project, but HBO is on the hunt for someone to fill the job. They also report that there “may be a feature component to the project.” In other words, HBO and Warner Bros. are considering the possibility of making a movie, which could then dovetail into the series proper.
While Variety notes that these plans are still “in flux at present” and nothing is set in stone, the idea of a movie and series about Aegon’s Conquest is ridiculously exciting. This is a period of Westeros history that fans have been eager to see explored on screen. To get it on both the big and small screen would be a dream.
HBO reportedly developing a show and film about Aegon’s Conquest
Aegon’s Conquest forms the basis for the beginning of George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, as well as the start of Targaryen rule over Westeros. Set 300 years before Game of Thrones, the new spinoff would dramatize how Aegon I Targaryen and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya first came to Westeros and used their dragons to bring six of the seven kingdoms under their rule. Aegon’s Conquest features a ton of iconic moments in the Game of Thrones mythos, like the burning of Harrenhal, the Field of Fire, the creation of the Iron Throne, and more. Only Dorne resisted the might of Aegon and his sisters, and even that was a bloody, brutal affair.
Obviously, this news is massive if true. HBO has been famously cautious with their approach to spinoffs for Thrones, but with the success of last year’s prequel show House of the Dragon, perhaps they’re seeing just how much more of an appetite there is for more stories in Westeros — and more Targaryen stories in particular. After hearing about Balerion the Black Dread for more than a decade in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, we might actually get to see the largest dragon in Westerosi history in all his terrifying glory. I’m getting chills just thinking about it.
Of course, just because the ideas is being discussed doesn’t guarantee the spinoff will get made. But rest assured, we’ll be following this story very closely as it develops. Keep an eye on this space for updates.
