Oscar-winning ‘Everything Everywhere’ creators defend working on Star Wars
By Ashley Hurst
This year, the crazy, multiverse-hopping Everything Everywhere All At Once took home the Oscar for Best Picture, no doubt becoming the wildest movie to ever claim the prestigious award. Stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan also won Oscars, while creators Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert claimed Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay honors. One of the visionary duo’s next projects to release is an episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which will premiere later this year!
Sadly, merely days after The Hollywood Reporter dropped the news that they’re joining the galaxy far, far away, Kwan has had to take to social media to explain their plans. No they aren’t sell-outs — in fact, they were working on Skeleton Crew before EEAAO was even released. Sure, they’re getting a hefty pay check, but everyone needs to keep their healthcare, as Kwan writes.
“Lol, all of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill. These headlines are always misleading,” Kwan wrote on his Instagram Story.
"Don’t worry. We aren’t working on a whole series, we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode a while ago (before EEAAO even came out). We love Jon, love Star Wars, love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!) so it was an easy yes."
“I’m excited for you all to see it,” he concluded, before confirming that he and Scheinert‘s next project is original. “Our next film will be an original Daniels project so you can stop worrying (and stop bothering me about it).”
What is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew about and when is it releasing?
Set in the same time frame as The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew tells a typical coming-of-age story, following a group of kids who suddenly find themselves trapped and in need of piloting a space ship in order to return home. Jude Law is the big name attached to the project.
The show is helmed by Marvel mastermind Jon Watts —who is best known for his work on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies. Besides Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the series is building a great team of guest directors. The Green Knight’s visionary director David Lowery is also attached to direct an episode.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew does not have a release date yet, but it is scheduled to drop on Disney+ later this year! We can’t wait to see Kwan and Scheinert‘s direction!
