Streaming Wars, April 2023: Everyone breaks out the big guns

The Last of Us, Succession, Ted Lasso, The Mandalorian, Shadow and Bone and battle it out in the Streaming Wars.

Each month, we read over the latest dispatches from the front lines of the Streaming Wars and assess how the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and the rest are doing. Who won the day, who was defeated, and who’s biding their time? We mark it all down on this living graph, which changes every month.

Let’s recap what happened on the battlefield in March of 2023:

Paramount+

Paramount+ continued to air new episodes of Star Trek: Picard in March, and debuted new series like School Spirits and Rabbit Hole. Not much moved the needle, but there’s been a fair amount of chatter about Rabbit Hole, so we’ll be generous. Points: +2

Netflix

Netflix always kills us with quantity, including new episodes of You, a Chris Rock comedy special where he talked about the Slap, a new season of Shadow and Bone, a Luther follow-up with Idris Elba, and new shows like The Night Agent. It adds up. Points: +3

Disney+

The big-ticket item in March was the premiere of The Mandalorian season 3. Beyond that, we got new episodes of The Bad Batch and some new kids programming. Points: +2

Hulu

Between a new adaptation of Great Expectations, the debut of History of the World: Part II, a new episode of Attack on Titan and some great library titles, Hulu had a better-than-usual month. Points: +3

HBO Max

HBO Max didn’t have a ton of new content this month, but what it got was excellent, including the end of the first season of The Last of Us and the start of the final season of Succession. Perry Mason is very much worth watching as well. Points: +3

Amazon Prime Video

In addition to library titles, Amazon got new originals like rock’n’roll drama Daisy Jones and the Six and Swarm, produced by Donald Glover. Not the best month, not the worst. Points: + 2

Apple TV+

Apple TV+ finally gets a buzzworthy title with the third season of Ted Lasso. The movie Tetris got some play, too. Points: + 2

Peacock

The biggest releases on Peacock in March were the true crime series Who Killed Robert Wone? And the reality dating show Queens Court. Not a great showing. Points: + 1
