Paramount+ making a new Star Trek show about Starfleet Academy

Paramount+ is exploring every inch of the final frontier. How many Star Trek shows does it have running concurrently? The third season of Star Trek: Picard is running as we speak. Then there’s Star Trek: Discovery, the animated adult comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks, the animated kids shows Star Trek: Prodigy, and the serialized prequel show Strange New Worlds, which airs its new season this June.

And now, a newcomer approaches: The A.V. Club reports that Paramount+ is officially making a new Star Trek show about Starfleet Academy, where the best and brightest in the galaxy train to go out and explore the stars.

Alex Kurtzman, who has working on the Star Trek franchise since the 2009 movie with Chris Pine, with serve as showrunner alongside Noga Landau. “Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy!” they said in a cheeky statement. “Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!”

A Star Trek show about Starfleet Academy is coming

Setting a show at a school is a savvy move, since it allows the producers to hire a cast of young, fresh-faced actors to take the franchise forward (and maybe get a franchise veteran in there as an instructor or something). Landau has worked on The Magicians and Nancy Drew, so she should be able to navigate the teen drama aspects of the show.

I made light up top of how many Trek shows are currently on the air or in production. This is another one, but it should be noted that both Picard and Discovery are coming to an end, Picard after its current third season and Discovery after its upcoming fifth. So we’re losing two and getting one. The final frontier may actually be slightly less crowded soon.

There’s no premiere date set as of yet for the Starfleet Academy show.
