RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon joins cast of Doctor Who
By Dan Selcke
The future of Doctor Who is looking more interesting by the day. Russell T Davies, the guy who originally rebooted the show back in 2005, is coming back for season 14. and he’s making some bold moves. First up, David Tennant will return as the Doctor for a trio of specials that start airing in November. After that, season 14 will bring in Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor.
And now, Variety reports that RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon will join the show in a “major role,” which could mean a season arc or it could mean a guest star spot in one episode; it’s hard to be certain.
I confess I’m a bit of a Drag Race superfan; like really, I’ve watched way too much of the show, and I’m familiar with Jinkx’s work. She won both season 5 and a later season where previous winners came back to compete against each other. From where I’m sitting, she’s proooooobably the most talented person to come out of the series. When it came to acting, singing, improv and comedy, she really couldn’t be beat. The only thing she couldn’t do well was make her own outfits, and that won’t be a problem on Doctor Who… I mean, unless Disney is hard up for cash and forces the cast to make their own costumes, which would be funny and I support it.
Doctor Who season 14 cast
Jinkx Monsoon is currently coming off a Broadway run of Chicago. She’s not the only Drag Race alumni getting these sorts of gigs, either; All Stars 5 winner Shea Couleé has joined the cast of the Marvel show Ironheart. As a Drag Race fan, I am very entertained by all of this and definitely more likely to check out the new season of Doctor Who when it starts airing next year.
The cast of Doctor Who season 14 also includes Millie Gibson, Bhav Joshi, Eilidh Loan, Pete MacHale, Miles Yekinni, Jemma Redgrave, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Forsyth-Noble and Hemi Yeroham. And Catherine Tate will return as Donna Noble for those David Tennant specials. Like I said, interesting.
