Stranger Things will end after its upcoming fifth and final season, likely due out sometime in 2024. But like a wild beast that dies alone in the forest, beautiful fungi will soon take root in its corpse, sprouting by and by into sequels, prequels, spinoffs and who-knows-what else.

We now have a look at the first growth. Netflix announced in a press release that it’s developing a Stranger Things animated series. Matt and Ross Duffer, who created the original show, will serve as executive producers although it sounds like animator Eric Robles will be handling things day-to-day. Quoth the Duffer Brothers:

"We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…"

How many Stranger Things spinoffs are there?

What is the animated show about? We have no idea. It could be an animated retelling of the original show. It could be a prequel exploring the development of the program that produced Eleven and her psychic brethren, it could be a sequel that follows the characters after the end of season 5, or it could something else entirely.

Also, is this the only Stranger Things spinoff Netflix has in production? We’d heard that Netflix was working on a spinoff before (and that star Finn Wolfhard correctly guessed what it’s about). Is this the same thing?

Honestly, I doubt it. My guess is that Netflix will put a few things into development so as to capitalize on the popularity of Stranger Things and keep the love alive in the absence of the original show. Whether that will work is something we’ll have to stand by to find out.
