It’s been a couple of days since the most recent episode of Succession aired on HBO, and I think enough time has passed to talk about some of the major events. Even so, here’s your SPOILER warning, cause this was a big one.

Okay, moving ahead: in the most recent episode of Succession, “Connor’s Wedding,” Logan Roy dies. He dies. Logan Roy, the domineering force around which the show turns, is dead. He skipped his son Connor’s wedding to close a business deal, collapsed in the bathroom of his private jet, and died.

This is the final season of Succession, and now it really feels like it. Star Brian Cox talked to The New York Times about his character’s shocking death. “[Showrunner Jesse Armstrong] called me, and he said, ‘Logan’s going to die,’” Cox said. “And I thought, ‘Oh, that’s fine.’ I thought he would die in about episode seven or eight, but episode three, I thought … ‘Well that’s a bit early.’ Not that I was bothered.”

"I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, the problem with a lot of television, particularly American television, is it goes past its sell-by date. And the great thing about Jesse and the writers is they wouldn’t do that… Always leave the party when it’s at its height, not when it’s going down."

Cox is famously blunt when giving interview, and this is no exception. I’m really going to miss him on Succession.

Succession star Brian Cox thought Logan would die, but not so early

Overall, Cox sounds like he approves of killing Logan earlier than expected. That said, he can see some potential problems if fans get feel shortchanged.

“You think about Game of Thrones, when they didn’t know what they were doing at the end, and they had an ending which was not really satisfactory. And the audience was furious,” Cox said. “The [Succession] audience might be furious; they might miss Logan and say, ‘Oh, what are you doing killing off one of the most interesting characters?’ But it’s fine by me. I’m doing a lot of other stuff.”

The Game of Thrones ending did indeed not sit right with a lot of fans. With its biggest character off the board, it’s anybody’s guess how Succession will wrap up; they’re not even halfway through the season. But they have my attention.
